Why This Role Matters

MissionHires is partnering with a healthcare organization in Northern New Mexico to hire a Health Information Management (HIM) Director. Reporting to the CFO, this senior leader will oversee strategic and daily HIM operations, ensure the integrity, accessibility, and security of medical records, and maintain full regulatory compliance (including HIPAA). The role drives documentation standards, audits, budgeting, staffing, information governance, and cross-functional collaboration with clinical and administrative leaders.

How You'll Contribute
  • Lead and manage daily operations of the Health Information Management department
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, policies, and procedures aligned with organizational and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure integrity, accuracy, confidentiality, and accessibility of patient health records and documentation
  • Oversee internal and external audits related to HIM and regulatory compliance
  • Supervise staff including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective actions
  • Manage departmental budgets and ensure operations remain within allocated resources
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to improve documentation processes and data integrity
  • Maintain compliance with privacy and regulatory standards such as HIPAA
  • Support information governance, quality improvement, and patient care documentation initiatives
  • Plan, assign, and review work to maintain high quality standards
  • Provide professional development, mentorship, and promote a collaborative, growth-oriented culture
  • Ensure staffing levels and scheduling align with operational needs

What Makes You a Great Fit
  • RHIT or RHIA certification
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations and compliance requirements (including HIPAA)
  • Experience managing health information systems, documentation processes, and regulatory standards
  • Proven leadership experience managing staff, including performance management and development
  • Ability to analyze complex operational challenges and implement effective solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Proficiency with common office and healthcare information systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent relevant experience
  • Preferred: Experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Preferred: Experience training staff and leading performance improvement initiatives
